Thank you to Pushkin Press and Netgalley for the review copy in exchange for an honest review. This does not change my opinion in anyway.

Trigger/Content Warnings: Attempted Rape
Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map—the key to a legendary treasure trove—seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship.
More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate, Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.
I had high expectations of Daughter of the Pirate King. I’ve always loved pirates and I do love Pirates of the Carribean. However this book did not live up to it.
Alossa lets herself get kidnapped by this pirate crew to retrieve a map. But she finds a little more than she bargained for in her captor Riden.
And if that doesn’t sound like a recipe for a romance I don’t know what does. A lot of my problem with this book is regarding the romance. Not only are they violent towards one another, Riden lets his brother take her to hurt and rape her. I don’t know how that is suppose to make a good basis for a relationship.
A lot of the moments in the first three quarter are the book are also there to serve for the romance. Riden taking a prisoner in his room is just bloody stupid. Letting a prisoner walk around your ship for multiple nights to see what she is up to is even worse. I’m sorry but in that regard these were a bunch of stupid vanilla pirates. Everything is worked around to fit for the romance and making Alossa seem super great. It is obnoxious in every way.
Lets not talk about the world building because there isn’t much there.
Are they releasing a new version or a new sequel? I’m just surprised to see it as an arc since they’ve been out for years! At least the new cover is pretty🤣

I have the same question!! I see this pop up relatively often on Instagram, but with a different book cover.

Pushkin is rereleasing this book. I was surprised to see it on netgalley too to be honest. It is probably because there is also a new sequel coming in 2023 I saw. Since it’s been a while they seem to be rerelasing the first two books (book 2 is rereleasing in November).
