Classics are a weird thing to me. Sometimes I can see why something has become a classic but with others I’m not so sure. I guess that is the same thing as how some books we read now will be drawn to while others can’t see what you like.
Top Ten Tuesday (as always hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl) asks us what we think will be 21st century classics. And isn’t that a hard prompt? I don’t know if one can really predict that. But I can hope. So here are 5 recentish books that I think will stand out in the future.

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang
I expect that I will not be the only one that will put The Poppy War on their list, even more so considering the recent events in Europe. The way a war is depicted and how it affects those in it. The victims, fighting and so on. But also Rin who is not your typical hero. Not really a hero anyway. I think there various aspects of this story that will appeal to others.
A Master of Djinn by P. Djeli Clark
A Master of Djinn is such a stand-out piece to me because of the setting. A historical Cairo with fantasy weaved through. And next to that the characters also are a unique set.
Jade City by Fonda Lee
As a whole I think the Green Bone Saga is one that takes you along for the ride of a kind of mob story where you end of up loving the characters and you want them to be okay. And yes there are so many great themes in this story. Nothing I can say here will do justice to this trilogy. I mean the Godfather as a movie became a classic, right
The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Chris Riddell
The combination of Chris Riddels illustrations and the twist in the story will make this standout amongst the other retellings.
The Sword of Kaigen by ML Wang
Another story that tells what a war does to people. It is heart felt and heart breaking story.
Ik loop zo achter op de recente “klassiekers”. Vier van degene die je vermeld staan al even op mij TBR. De 5de (A Master of Djinn) komt er nu op! 🙂

En wat is nu ook een moderne klassieker? Ik denk ook voor zoveel mensen heel verschillend. A Master of Djinni is echt super.

Ooooh, I’ve never heard of the retelling by Neil Gaiman! It sounds like it’s a sleeping beauty story? I’m not very familiar with that tale but I’m really interested in a Gaiman + art version of it!

I also had a really hard time trying to determine what makes a book a “classic.” It just never made much sense to me. I like your picks, though!

Right, it is al such a fancy of its time anyway. I’m sure the teens of 100 years in the future will wonder what we were on haha.

Hopefully the teens of 100 years from now will at least have some classics that resonate better with them.

It was the only way to go for me since I am a mostly fantasy reader 😀

I love that you chose fantasy books specifically. I think people often feel that classics are books that have more literary merit than other books and fantasy or sci-fi don’t fit into that category, which is just not true. Great just! 🙂

Absolutely. SFF can discuss some of the biggest themes and topics in a way that sometimes literary books can’t.

I haven’t read any of these, but I’ve heard enough about them all to agree that they could definitely be classics-in-the-making!
Happy TTT!

I still need to read The Poppy War. The library waitlist is massive, so I don’t think I’ll get it anytime soon. I’m glad that so many people love it.

Oh I can imagine. It really blew up and they’ll only have one or a few copies.

Dat is een moeilijke. Of we zouden een glazen bol moeten hebben zodat we nu alvast konden voorspellen wat men later als een klassieker gaat beschouwen.
