Do I Remember That? | Bookish Memory Check | #WyrdandWonder

One of the fun things of Wyrd and Wonder is that you always get inspired by others.

For instance Imyril from There Is Always Room for One More shared this very fun book tag she saw over on Tanja’s Where Stories Lie. So here I am, jumping right in on seeing how bad my memory really is…

The Rules

  • Go to your Goodreads ‘read’ shelf
  • Sort by random
  • Test your memory on the top five books

Dragonslayer (The Dragonslayer 1) by Duncan M. Hamilton

Read in: 2019

What I remember
This is about an old alcoholic knight who lost his family and who is going out to slay a dragon that is slowly awaking. That is about what I remember. I found the book very boring so it stands to reason I wouldn’t remember too much here.

What it is actually about
Oh okay so in this kingdom it is thought that dragons are dead and so dragonslayers are no longer needed. This includes our old knight who is disgraced and forgotten. But when a dragon awakes again, they have need of him as he is the only dragonslayer still left.

Not too bad. I got the very basics and all. It was more than I thought haha.

The Haunting of Aveline Jones by Phil Hickes

Read in: 2020

What I Remember
So Aveline is going to visit her aunt during fall break, just before Halloween. When there she discovers a book with a story ripped out and that the house her aunt has bought is haunted. In fact, the previous girl that lived there dissapeared. It is thought that she had killed herself but as she uncovers the story from the book, Aveline stops believing that.

What it is actually about
Aveline Jones loves reading ghost stories, so a dreary half-term becomes much more exciting when she discovers a spooky old book. Not only are the stories spine-tingling, but it once belonged to Primrose Penberthy, who vanished mysteriously, never to be seen again. Intrigued, Aveline decides to investigate Primrose’s disappearance.
Now someone… or something, is stirring. And it is looking for Aveline.

I missed a few details but then so did the synopsis so there you have it. I think I did well there.

Kiss and Spell (Enchanted Inc. 7) by Shanna Swendson

Read in: 2020

What I remember
I know this is the seventh Enchanted Inc book so it is about Katie Chandler and her boyfriend Owen who work at the company Enchanted Inc, who create and sell legal spells. She’s not magical but can see through magic tricks. And I think in this one she suddenly gets magical powers.

What it is actually about
So I got the basics right but there is also a plot about the elf lord and her identity is also obscured. I mean sort of well done.

Decently. I got the basic plot right but there was just more to it than that.

Shadow Frost (Shadow Frost 1) by Coco Ma

Read In: 2019

What I Remember
I…don’t know. I only remember a kingdom with betrayal, and how much I disliked it in the end. #oops

What it is actually about
When Asterin Faelenhart, Princess of Axaria and heir to the throne, discovers that she may hold the key to defeating the mysterious demon terrorizing her kingdom, she vows not to rest until the beast is slain. With the help of her friends and the powers she wields — though has yet to fully understand — Asterin sets out to complete a single task. The task that countless, trained soldiers have failed.
To kill it.

I got the kingdom right!

Stronger Than a Bronze Dragon by Mary Fan

Read in: 2019

What I remember
Oh gosh. I remember our main character being forced into an arranged marriage by her town so that they could get the benefits of her husbands protection. But as she nearly arrives, she escapes. But that is about where the details escape me.

What it is actually about
When a powerful viceroy arrives with a fleet of mechanical dragons and stops an attack on Anlei’s village, the villagers see him as a godsend. They agree to give him their sacred, enchanted River Pearl in exchange for permanent protection—if he’ll marry one of the village girls to solidify the alliance. Anlei is appalled when the viceroy selects her as a bride, but with the fate of her people at stake, she sees no choice but to consent. Anlei’s noble plans are sent into a tailspin, however, when a young thief steals the River Pearl for himself.

Forgot about the pearl and the thief and the mechanical dragons. Oops.

Well that was confronting. With books from not even that long ago. On the other hand, these all weren’t books that were favorites of any kind. Well Aveline Jones was mostly, which is why I remembered the most from that one. But it stands to reason I wouldn’t remember too much from others without having my memory jogged by a synopsis or character.

  1. You did really well! Sometimes I can’t even recognize the name of the book especially if it’s something I read many years ago, so recalling the basic plot details is a win 😀
