You know I could have sworn I did a post about animal companions one or two years ago but for some reason I can’t find it when I search. Which is interesting. I think at the time I did it as a topic for top ten tuesday during Wyrd and Wonder.
In any case I’ll be doing it agian for todays topic of animals in books from Top Ten Tuesday (as always hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl).

Falada from Thorn by Intisar Khanani
A loving, but a little obnoxious talking horse that stands by Alyra in their own way.
Tannevar from Between Starfalls from S. Kaeth
Tannevar is the wolf companion of our main character in this book. Through mind powers she can bond with him which makes them stronger.
Wyverns from Guards!Guards! by Terry Pratchett
There is a certain lady in Guards! Guards! who breeds wyvern, a type of dragon. And these wyvern are simply the cutest, the quirkest and the weirdest little things.
Nine from Spellcaster Academy by Jennetta Penner
Nine is a talking cat and familiar to our main character. He has ties to the history that she knows nothing about (and isn’t sharing), but is fiercely loyal.
Gryphons from the Narroway Hunt by Rhiannon Williams
During their training you can learn to become a flier with which you get a gryphon to train on. It is always interesting to see which one you get. They are stubborn creatures but all have their own personalities. And once you gain their trust they are the best kind of companion to have.
Training a gryphon sounds awesome.

These are great choices! Any kind of dragon is always my favorite kind of animal companion.

Surprisingly I have zero books featuring an animal companion! I probably overlooked something, haha!
I do like, in movies, comics, etc. if the animal companion plays a pivotal (of at the very least; important) role and is not some sort of afterthought.

Oh I agree. I hate it when they are an afterthought.

You can’t go wrong with a talking cat but wyverns are great too.

I haven’t read Guards! Guards! yet, but now I’m curious about said wyverns. Might need to pick that one up before too long just to see what they’re all about. You know that’s probably the one I’d go for, too. 😉

I haven’t read any of these yet. My favorite companion is a dog – I’ve got an 18mo Golden Retriever who is both sweet and psychotic 🙂 Great list and thanks for stopping by my TTT.
