Next week for Top Ten Tuesday (as always hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl) we have a cover freebie. As I was considering what I wanted to do for that I also realized I’d like to give more attention to some of the cover artists. We like to drool over various covers but rarely do we mention the designers and artists.
This weeks topic is books for my younger self but I am not really feeling that prompt again so here we are. I mostly just saw one cover and found the artist and then later looked to see what others they have done. I was surprised to see some other familiar favorites.
Coralie Bickford-Smith
She is responsible for the Penguin Classic clothbound series that so many of us have drooled over. She has also published her own illustrated books. She currently works in house at Penguin. You can find more about her work here. She has a very specific kind of style and I love it.
Robert Hunt
Robert Hunt is an illustrator that has done work with a great number of big names like Nike, Rolling Stone, Disney etc. You can read more about him here. Again, he has a very specific kind of style in his artwork that feels very dreamy.
David Curtis
David Curtis is an illustrator and designer who does a lot of work for Harper Collins, but also other publishers. He has done so many of my favorite book covers! You can find more about him here.
Chris Riddell
Riddell is probably the best known illustrator on this list and has done a lot of illustrated versions of books like those of Neil Gaiman and Francis Hardinge. He doesn’t seem to have an official official website though he is very active on social media like on Tumblr that he calls his sketchbook.
Feifei Ruan
Feifei Ruan is a Chinese illustrator and storyteller. She has done various kind of book covers (that are absolutely stunning), magazines and worked on some comics like Sashimi. You can find out more about her here.
Tran Nguyen
Tran Nguyen is an award winning illustrator. She creates very whimsical landscape and soft women for book covers, magazines and advertising. You can read more about her here.
Simon Prades
Simon Prades is an artist from Germany. He works in editorial but has done a few book covers as well. I really hope to see more from him. You can read more about it here.
Jenny Zemanek
Jenny Zemanek is Seedlings Design Studio. She’s always had a love for photography and art. Her design studio focuses exclusively on book covers and promotional design for authors. You can find out more about her here.
Will Staehle
Unusual Corporation is the studio by Will Staehle. He grew up working at a design firm and as an art director for Harper Collins. You can read more about him here.
Jung Shan Chang
Jung Shan Chang makes gorgeous ink art style covers. You can find out more about her here.
Some really stunning artwork here! I agree that we should talk more about the artists and designers whose work sells books to us! 😊

These are some really gorgeous covers. And it’s so nice to find out some of my favourite book covers were all designed by the same person. I’ll definitely be on the look out for more.

Love the topic you chose for today. All of these covers are so freaking gorgeous! Posts like these always make me wonder why I never look to see who does the cover designs for books I read 😅 I think Chris Riddell has one of the most distinguishable styles (I can always guess when he’s done the illustrations), but I absolutely love all of these covers 😍

That’s awesome, I love seeing cover designers highlighted, definitely think their work should be highlighted more.

This was a really cool post! I had no idea some of these covers had the same illustrator!

You are so right! The artists and designers do go unappreciated for the most part because we get busy just admiring the work they’ve done. I’m surprised by this list and I love how the designer of one book cover I loved also designed other covers I loved. Again and again. LOVE IT!!
Here’s my Top Ten Tuesday post.

This is a great topic! I’m going to have to borrow this one for a future TTT freebie, it’s such a great idea. And I love some of the covers you’ve highlighted, but I never thought to look up the artist! Shame on me.

Oh my gosh! I didn’t even realize some of these cover artists!! Now this makes me want to look more into some of my favorite books and see who the artist is. Thanks so much for doing this twist! I love this so much.

A wonderful list! This is the approach I’m taking to next week’s prompt too (cover artists/illustrators), we so often are drawn to books by their beautiful cover art, the designers deserve credit! The variety of work they each produce is astonishing.

Wow! I love this so much! Cover artists deserve so much more credit than they actually receive. All their work is absolutely stunning!

Will Staehle and Coralie Bickford-Smith are two of my fav cover designers.

What a pretty post to read *-* It’s neat to see that some covers I would never have linked to the same designer are actually by the same person, like with David Curtis’ work.

Oh, what an interesting topic! Where do even you find information on cover artists/cover design?? I’ve often wanted to look more into this subject (especially when publishers do reissues of an author’s work all in one style), but I never know what to search for.
I’m especially excited to see a name put to Ruby’s cover, one of the few I’ve both read and long admired the design of, and to learn about the existence of Coralie Bickford-Smith, who is clearly just made of awesome.

It can be hard to find but googling helps a lot. And a lot of cover reveals mention the artist these days.

Great selections!! I really like the penguin covers (who wouldn’t?) but I didn’t know who drew them – very interesting! This week was a hard prompt (there were so many options haha) but I really like where you’ve gone with it. Here was my go at this TTT 🙂 :https://hundredsandthousandsofbooks.blog/2020/09/15/top-ten-tuesday-predicting-plots-of-books-on-my-tbr/

Wauw! Eigenlijk wel heel knap om te zien hoe je bij sommige van hen in vrijwel elk ontwerp meteen hun stijl herkent terwijl anderen heel gevarieerde illustraties maken.
