The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three sons in line for the throne are killed in an “accident,” he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving rightful heir.
Entirely unschooled in the art of court politics, he has no friends, no advisors, and the sure knowledge that whoever assassinated his father and brothers could make an attempt on his life at any moment.
Surrounded by sycophants eager to curry favor with the naïve new emperor, and overwhelmed by the burdens of his new life, he can trust nobody. Amid the swirl of plots to depose him, offers of arranged marriages, and the specter of the unknown conspirators who lurk in the shadows, he must quickly adjust to life as the Goblin Emperor. All the while, he is alone, and trying to find even a single friend . . . and hoping for the possibility of romance, yet also vigilant against the unseen enemies that threaten him, lest he lose his throne–or his life.

Chapters 1-1718-26

Let’s start with Maia’s grandfather! What do you think of the Avar, and his budding relationship with Maia?

I think its interesting. The reason he finally came was because of Maia, I am sure of that. And he clearly feels guilty about not being there for his daughter. He wants to compensate for that with Maia. I think he’d rather just take Maia away from it all because he thinks that would make things more right with his passed daughter. I hope they will get to spend some more years together over the next few years.

Another plot against Maia is foiled… Were you surprised by the reveal of Tethimar as the one behind the late emperor’s murder? And what are your thoughts on this reveal, in light of the way this part of the story played out?

I mean, looking back at the whole story it does make sense. But I didn’t feel this portion of the plot was the most cohesive as Tethimar was also used for other gains.  It just didn’t feel quite as spectacular as what I thought was going to come from someone closer to Maia.

For all of the enmity that’s shown to him, our emperor has a much more hopeful nickname by the end… Looking back, are you satisfied with/pleased by the way Maia handled all of these situations in which he had to make or break relationships? Was there anything you were left questioning or that you feel should have gone differently?

I mean, I think he was allowed to stick it to them all. But he remained so very diplomatic. And for his situation I think that was good. I just wish he’d kick some up the ass. Just the once haha. On the other hand his fiancee/future wife might do that for him in the future.

I think I missed seeing more of their interactions. I don’t quite feel their story has ended.

  1. Hah, I didn’t read your whole review because you warned for spoilers and I just started this book yesterday. I’m still at the point where he just got to the palace and had already to assert him from moment one and showed surprisingly some backbone. Still curious how he will handle that obnoxious cousin of his (don’t tell me, want to discover it by myself).

  2. Same here. I would have liked more interactions between Maia and his empress-to-be too… I just want another book about Maia.

I welcome your thoughts and opinions!
