1. What is your fantasy origin story? (The first fantasy novel you read)

As a child I wasn’t hugely into fantasy ( I know!) but I did read Roald Dahl of course. The first fantasy series I conciously remember picking out and buying in a store was The Snow-Walker trilogy by Catherine Fisher. I still love that series as an adult. Though I do prefer my Dutch covers ha.

2. If you could be the hero/heroine in a fantasy novel, who would be the author and what’s one trope you’d insist be in the story?

Oh that is hard. I never quite feel like a heroine you know. Uhm I guess I’d like Rachel Hartman to write it and I’d need any kind of dragon trope in the story.

3. What is a fantasy you’ve read this year, that you want more people to read?

This year? 2020? The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith. But also the middle grades Die Duftaphotheke and Ghost Squad.

4. What is your favourite fantasy subgenre? What subgenre have you not read much from?

Oh poeh. I’d say just high fantasy. Most of all I like my fantasy with dragons and all things you can’t find in our world. In that regard I also like portal fantasy but I haven’t read that many.

As for subgenre that doesn’t quite appeal to me I’d say paranormal romance.

5. Who is one of your auto-buy fantasy authors?

Just the one? Right now I’d say Jen Williams, Jonathan Stroud, Zen Cho, Mark Lawrence.

6. How do you typically find fantasy recommendations? (Goodreads, Youtube, Podcasts, Instagram..)

Twitter I’d say. I mean so many people like to share what they love to read on there and it is an easy way to communicate. But also blog events like Wyrd and Wonder help me find more fantasy reads because of everyone’s enthusiasm.

7. What is an upcoming fantasy release you’re excited for?

The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water  by Zen Cho even though I’ve already read it, haha.

8. What is one misconception about fantasy you would like to lay to rest?

Hmm I guess people have the idea that fantasy is still the young male hero becomes snowflake and saves the day kind of thing by M. White Author. And granted those are still around and that isn’t nessecarily a bad thing if that is what you like. But to those that complain I feel that maybe you haven’t quite shopped around enough. Authors like N.K. Jemisin, Zen Cho, Jen Williams, Rachel Hartman, Robert Jackson Bennett and so on and so on have been creating intense and diverse fantasy worlds with lgbtq+, poc leads and in general more diversity in the world building. So stop complaining and look a little harder. You’ll find such treasures if you do.

9. If someone had never read a fantasy before and asked you to recommend the first 3 books that come to mind as places to start, what would those recommendations be?

10. Who is the most recent fantasy reading content creator you came across that you’d like to shoutout?

We are smack in the middle of wyrd and wonder. So check the hashtag out because they are all amazing.
