As I was thinking what else could I do my shelf stats on someone asked on twitter what others had of a title starting with a letter. That got me interested and I decided to see what my shelves were divided in. I will be honest and say I only did the shelves downstairs, and I left out manga and classics. And Merijn’s picture books.
Of course one has expectations. Personally I thought that the letter S, M and T would end up really high. Husband thought the S and E would end up super high. So lets have a look
Obviously here the particles, the, a and the Dutch versions of that, were left out of this percentage.
Particles and ‘Lidwoorden’
I did however keep track of the particles.
So looking at this I also had to decide where to put the dutch ones with the english ones. English has about two: A(n) and The. Dutch has three: De, Het Een.
Een and A both don’t refer to a specific thing so it made sense to put those together. The difference between De and Het is that Het is impartial and De is partial. For that reason I didn’t put Het with The and De.
Or rather my language feelings decided that for me and afterwords I looked up to see why I felt like that. Ha.
Non is of course titles that didn’t start with any of these but with just a word.
