Sometimes one gets ideas. Ideas that are somewhat time consuming. After looking at my shelves and seeing the male-female ratio of authors I looked at another statistic. The publishers. I can tell you I clearly underestimated the amount of different imprints I have on my shelves. My gosh. And I had to write it all down because I had no idea what was an imprint and if it was one, where it belonged. So I had over 70 written down.
It was a lot of work. Someone remind me of this whenever I have another one of these bright ideas.
Publishers per Country Percentage
As you can see there are 4 countries I get books from publisher wise. The Netherlands, Belgium, UK and America. I don’t think this is very surprising as I am Dutch so it stands to reason that if I have books in Dutch I’d have books from publishers in that country. I am surprised to see Belgium here. I don’t really know any of their publishers but I do know one now. You don’t generally see a lot of their books here.
As I read English a lot seeing USA and UK isn’t very weird either. They are two of the biggest publishing countries when it comes to English books. Canada and Australia seem to fall away in that. In general books by those publisher just don’t seem to be on offer here. Not in an actual book store nor online.
Percentage wise Dutch, UK and US publishers are rather close. A lot of authors are from USA that I read in English so it does stand to reason that they would end up quite a bit higher.
The Publishers
So the percentages of the publishers you see down below are per country so not of the total shelves. I did not have time to go that far haha. Also the imprints mentioned are the ones that are actually on my shelves and not all the imprints the publishers has.

This is such an interesting post. I haven’t seen one like this before but it’s intriguing to see where other reviewers get their books from 😀 Jen

It is. It was also really interesting to see where some of the imprints come from.

Me too. I also love figuring the breakdown out haha.

Hmm, it’s interesting to look at this breakdown from the perspective of a ‘not Anglophone’ country – I mean, for example, in terms of which American books get picked up by a Dutch publishers vs. which ones you got through the original American publisher.

True. It is interesting to see what kind of books get translated. You did make me think about looking into how many of my books in dutch are translations vs dutch authors and such. For next year.

Wow!

This is very interesting! I don’t pay much attention to the publishers, but I do take notice when it’s Tor for some reason. It’s also interesting to see what big houses some of the imprints are from. Thanks for taking the time to do this. 👍✨

Yeah I quite like Tor. And yeah I found that interesting as well and quite frankly, it took a lot of time to figure out where some came from.
