Today is a lovely freebie day for Top Ten Tuesday (as always hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl). Instead of struggling to figure out what I wanted to come up with, I already saw a great idea a few weeks ago as we were doing the inspirational book quotes prompt (that I passed on).
Lovely Alicia from A Kernel of Nonsense shared opening lines in books that she loved for that prompt and that a 100% grabbed me. I almost always pass on the quote prompts because I can’t remember them. But first or opening lines, well that is different. I can look those up easily! So I went by some of my owned books and am now sharing the results.
A Darker Shade of Magic // Starting a book with a peculiar coat really got my attention haha.
Aru Shah and the End of Time // Which is the truth and it made me wonder what these highly dangerous things were that she could get used to.
Hogfather // Pratchett always has a way with words and capturing your attention.
Red Sister // Look you can’t talk like this about a nun and expect me not to question your sanity.
The Screaming Staircase // Ingenious ways of mucking up. My favorite kind.
Timekeeper // How do you misplace an hour?
Uprooted // The word dragon of course had my attention. Even more so with a capitol D. Everything else didn’t even matter.
A Monster Calls // This one stuck in my head the most after reading the book. Because yeah that is when the monsters come to me too sometimes…
Love this prompt 🙂 I haven’t read any of these, but they’re definitely great first lines!

That Terry Pratchett quote sounds so much like Douglas Adams: “The story so far: In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.” (The Restaurant at the End of the Universe)
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

Ah I love this topic because first lines are so important 🙂 Kell’s peculiar coat definitely stuck by me as well. And my reminder that I need to read Red Sister and Timekeeper sooon!

I’m so glad you enjoyed the prompt and that you did it too. I had a lot of fun looking through books, trying to find the best lines to share. That first page of A Darker Shade of Magic is astounding. I love it so much. Okay, I need to read Aru Shah now after reading that first line. Great post!

I’ve always loved the one about Kell’s coat, and the nun one makes me really curious about Red Sister! I would totally want to read about this nun.
