While I do enjoy getting this books that are hyped or that are getting a ton of postive reviews right before and after release, something it can be nice to pick something up that you know very little about. That hadn’t gotten a lot of attention. In 2018 I had a few of these kind of reads. A lot through Netgalley to be honest. And some of these surprise me by how little ratings they have.
I’m planning this post in at the end of December so some of these books might have gotten a bit more ratings than I am putting down below. Be aware of that. This list goes from highest to lowest ratings.
This post is being linked up with Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl) as they have the topic books i loved with fewer than 2000 ratings.
Toil & Trouble. Edited Jessica Spotswood and Tess Sharpe / 1603 Ratings
The Amulet of Samarkand (The Graphic Novel) by Jonathan Stroud / 1184 Ratings
The Little Shop of Found Things by Paula Brackston / 936 Ratings
The Many Worlds of Albie Bright by Christopher Edge / 837 Ratings
Deadly Sweet (Spellwork Syndicate 1) by Lola Dodge / 267 Ratings
How to Fracture a Fariytale by Jane Yolen / 175 Ratings
City of Broken Magic (Chronicles of Amicae 1) by Mirah Bolender / 91 Ratings
The Demon Race by Alexandria Warwick / 25 Ratings
Fell Beasts and Fair Edited by C.J. Brightley / 12 Ratings
Ewan Pendle and the Castle of Nightmares (Ewan Pendle 2) by Shaun Hume / 4 Ratings
I can’t wait to read Toil and Trouble this year.

Wow, I didn’t realize that The Amulet of Samarkand had below 2k, it’s just a good one too! I read Toil and Trouble last year as well.

It is. This is however the graphic novel version. I’m pleased to say the actual book has over 2000 😀

Ah, that makes more sense! I had no idea it had a graphic novel adaptation! I’ll have to try and find it.

Great list! I need to get to Toil & Trouble soon, it’s right up my street so the next time I’m in the mood for some short stories I need to pick it up.

I’m really surprised that Toil & Trouble had less than 2000 ratings on Goodreads. For a while I was seeing it everywhere. 📚

Right? It was everwhere but I guess it stagnated for a bit. People don’t easily pick up anthologies I guess.

Netgalley Read Now is a great way to find books that don’t have very many ratings. Some aren’t very good, but you do pick up a hidden gem sometimes.

True. Netgalley in general to be honest because I don’t frequent Read Now that often.

Oooh, what a great list! I’ve heard really good things about Toil and Trouble, but I haven’t gotten to it just yet. Same with The Demon Race, which I actually purchased and just … wow, my backlog of books. xD I may have a problem lol.
