Initially for today I had noted down to do the topic of new adult fantasy. New adult as in the target group. However I am not quite liking how that post is turning out so instead I am doing something I have had noted down in my notebook for a while.
I think I’ve only ever done an if you like this…you’ll like that for top ten tuesday before. I think these always kind of spooked me. What if people don’t agree with me. But hey, this is based on my own insights of what I have read of these books and what they made me think about. I think that is always important to remember when going into these lists.
Some books can just remind you of another book and there is nothing wrong with that. Sometimes we look for books that are similiar to books that you really liked before. Or sometimes we are just in the mind for certain type of books. I know I have that very strong sometimes.
So here we have 7 young adult books and 7 adult books I think you might like if you liked those young adult books. Some of these might be obvious but I thought I’d put them out there anyway haha.
Why
Both deal with something that seems to be a playful game but has so much more behind it. Both have people behind the players that manipulate the game.
Why
Heists! Clever leaders. Both have an amazing band of characters that form lasting relationships.
Why
Demons. Both have demons in very different ways. And both demons are fairly self-centered, sarcastic and witty things.
Why
Both have a sentient item that interacts with the main character.
Why
Both use a different kind of format of telling the stories and are of the sci-fi genre.
Why
The writing style of Fairyland reminded me of Discworld right away. And there is something magical and whimsical about Fairyland that also right away reminded me of Discworld.
Why
They have a similar, intricate writing style and way to build the plot that makes the story lines come together in the end. The feel of the books was somewhat similiar with an air of mystery. Also both are historical fiction.
What a freakin fun post Annemieke!! I so agree with many of these pairings even though I tend to read the YA version and my writing partner reads the adult version… like I read Illuminae and she read Sleeping Giants and we compared notes, lol! So, so fun! I’ll have to share this with her.

Thank you! Haha that is fun though. It is great when you can compare notes with someone.

Lies of Locke Lamora has been recommended to me many times. One of those days I’ll have to read it one of these days š I did like Six of Crows, so you’re giving me hope. And yes yeeeees I really want to read Sleeping Giants! A great post. You should do more of these and maybe with other genres š

Yes read them! So good!
I want to but since I don’t very quickly find a book like another they take some time. I kind of want to do one for sci-fi month but I’m struggling with that, haha.

This is such a great post. Lies of Locke Lamora has been winning dust on my shelf. Perhaps I’ll give it a chance soon because Six of Crows is one of my favourite books ever – who doesn’t love a heist? š Sadly, I haven’t read many of the books your mentioned, but I do hope to read soon The Night Circus, Sleeping Giants and Fairyland.
Happy readings! š

This is such a fun post!! I’ve read most of the YA ones but only one adult one. I really need to get on that!

I will always sit up and pay attention to Six of Crows of you likes IF it has heists and #squadgoals … many say they have an if you like and then I read the description and get really frustrated but I just put your suggestion on hold at the library and have some hope. Thank you!

I really want to read Six of Crows – didn’t really enjoy Locke Lamora tho. I just couldn’t warm up to the main character. Which is kind of a bummer, considering he was kind of the whole point of the story š

Haha yeah if you can’t warm up to Locke than it kind of stops with that book. But you might have a better chance of liking Kaz and consorts in six of crows I think.

Fun post! I do love Illuminae, and I’m super curious about Sleeping Giants. I like that they both tell the story in a unique format.

I’m sort of proud that pretty much all of these are on my TBR. But then, I’m also a little sad that that means I haven’t actually read them yet. xD Oops? This is a fantastic list, though!

#oops. Haha. At least they have your attention. š

What a creative and fun idea for a post! I actually need this sort of help in my life because I only read YA and I feel like recently I’ve been kind of wanting to branch out into more adult-ish stuff. I love the Night Circus and I’m really glad you mentioned it alongside Caraval. Anyways, thanks for a fun and interesting post š

Thank you! Yeah sometimes it is just nice to branch out of your reading zone a bit with similiar books.

This is such a fabulous post idea! And I wholeheartedly agree with Illuminae and Sleeping Giants- and I will even say that I think the last Sleeping Giants book is BETTER than the last Illuminae book, so there’s that! I will have to check out some of the others, too!

Thank you š Oh I still have to read the last sleeping giants book. I have it on my tbr for sci-fi month. š

I adore the Fairyland books but haven’t read any of the Discworld books. Your comparison of the two makes me think I should pick up The Wee Free Men sooner than later, as it’s been on my TBR for ages.

You really should. The Tiffany Aching arc of Discworld is so much fun!
