Officially today is a back to school freebie of sorts for top ten tuesday (as always hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl) but I haven’t gone to school in a long time and I haven’t had any inspiration for this prompt since I first started doing top ten tuesday. So I am just doing a completely different topic.
Titles are pretty important when it comes to books. Not just for the meaning to the story. How are we otherwise to indicate what book we mean? ‘You know that book with so and so cover’ is not enough to let others know what book you are talking about.
And yet sometimes even with titles we go wrong. Sometimes titles sound like each other or the titles are just too long to remember.ย I always thought I had a decent memory but the more I read, and even more so after Merijn was born because oh my gosh mom brain is so a real thing, the more I seem to lose names and titles in the chaos that is my brain.
So enjoy this list of my mishaps.
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
I love Becky Chambers writing but why do her titles have to be so long? It took em forever to remember this title. Longer than I care to admit haha. Sometimes I still start with Small, Angry Planet. And in my head I keep saying The Long Way to a Small AND Angry Planet. I don’t know why. My mind has decided that is the title and I can’t get rid of it.
Shadow and Bone / Daughter of Smoke and Bone / Children of Blood and Bone
I so often messed up Shadow and Bone and Daugther of Smoke and Bone a few years ago. Honestly, I bought Daugther of Smoke and Bone thinking it was Shadow and Bone. And adding onto that we now have Children of Blood and Bone. And it takes me way too long to remember the correct title in my mind. I’m sorry!
A Thousand Pieces of You / A Thousand Perfect Notes
Look. Look at how similar they are. And they both have a bloody white cover with prettiness on it. And though I know perfectly well which is which my mind keeps stumbling around the titles. I’m sorry Cait. I still love you. Promise.
The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making
Even when I read it my brain stumbles over it…
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
I always forget the wardrobe. I’m not even kidding.
The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel
Serie stitles have no business being this long. Seriously. Why? Why not just Nicholas Flamel. Those of us who have read Harry Potter know him which is like 95%. (I’m kidding, I knew him before harry potter haha)
The Museum of Extraordinary Things
I don’t even know with this one. It just won’t stick.
Tempests and Slaughter
I keep typing Slaughters and Tempest, I don’t even know why. For the longest time I was so convinced that was the title, haha.
Ahaha donโt forget the wardrobe!! Great list ๐

I relate to too many of these, I always get Children of Blood and Bone confused with Daughter of Smoke and Bone! They’re just too similar!!

They are. It is one word difference. ๐ฆ

Ahaha such a fun post! I actually don’t get titles confused that often (who knows why since I’m always confused about something!) but I can see how they might be confusing given the amount of crossover words in YA titles!

There is so much crossover and long titles too!

Oh definitely! Authors should really think about these things for us poor readers ๐

I do this all the time! Especially with series names, like Seven Realms and Sevenwaters.

Oh yes, those kind as well. It is hard to keep everything straight.

Oh my gosh, right about Long Way. That thing needs a seriously good abbreviation or something! All the Daughter/ Children/ Shadow titles out there too- gah!! Sometimes at the bookstore when I’m in the YA section I see a title and I’m like- seriously people lol? Are you TRYING to blow these titles up??
The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland????? Really? I’m sure it’s good, but that’s… a long title.

It does. Right, especially in English a bunch seem like the exact same.
Yeah it is a bit too long to my liking as well as it is a mg, but it is apparently very good.

I cannot blame you for mixing up all the “bone” titles! I mix up a lot of the royalty titles because there are so many Queen/King/Prince/Princess titles in YA!

Awesome post!! Haha, I read Nicholas Flamel before I read HP so I knew who he was. And oh man, those Fairyland titles are the absolute worst๐คฃ

They are all so long haha.

Oh goodness, I didn’t even realize there were so many Smoke and Bone books. LOL Granted, I’ve only read Daughter of Smoke and Bone so far so I’m doing okay, but yeah, that’s confusing. Some titles really are too long or just kind of tricky to remember/say.

What a great topic! I can so relate. The longer titles are the easiest to mix up for me too. My daughter and husband always make fun of me because there are a few titles I never seem to get straight for whatever reason.

The longer they are the more words we have to jumble up, haha. It is difficult keeping all the titles straight too.

Yes, mom brain is a real thing! I can definitely see how you’d mix up these titles as several of them are very similar. Fun post! Here is our Top Ten Tuesday

Great list!
I called ‘Song of Blood & Stone’ ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ and my boyfriend reminded me that I wasn’t reading a Game of Thrones novel..

Oh I can see that mix up! It doesn’t help that so many refer to even the books as just games of thrones and not the series title, so when there is another book with song and you call it asoiaf it is harder to catch it.

Haha, I totally keep mixing up all those Blood and Bone and Shadow titles too ๐ And I always forget the Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet too (had to look back twice before typing this out just now)

Haha I have to look back with that one so often too. ๐

Titles with many words always manage to confuse me (e.g. Your Destination Is on the Left). Especially ones with more than one adjective. I mean???
So I totally get what you’re saying.

All those bone and shadow titles made me pause for a second. I totally mixed up Seawitch and Seafire for at least a couple of months.

Oh me too before I really started recognizing their covers since those are so very different.

I have trouble with the Chambers books too. I am pretty sure I still say AND Angry Planet! I struggle with some of the Outlander book titles. She has some very unique and long titles. I would give you examples but I can’t remember haha

Why is it that we feel the need to add And, hahaha?
Haha. Never make it too hard on your readers. ๐

I can never remember if it is A Long Way, or The Long Way. That’s why I like talking about Chamber’s books with people who are fans of her books because then I can just say: Long Way, Closed and Common, and Spaceborn Few. ๐

I think it is a long way but now that you mention it, I am doubting myself haha. And yes those shorts are just so much easier. ๐

Oh, I love your take on this week’s prompt! I’m also more than a little relieved that I’m totally not the only one that does this.
Oh my gosh, all the shadow and blood and bone and smoke has me all confused and messed up now, too. xD “The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making” — This makes my head hurt just thinking about trying to remember it.
I always get confused with My Grandmother Asked me to Tell You She’s Sorry. I usually end up saying some messed up version that’s sort of similar but not quite. xD

(I am so very behind on replying to comments, sorry). Yes we must feel each other’s pain.
Right? Why is it always shadow and bone, and smoke?
Oh I can imagine stumbling on that one. I wouldn’t remember that either.

For the longest time I thought Shadow and Bone and Daughter of Smoke and Bone were the same book ๐ ๐ Then after I learned they weren’t I still kept mixing them up haha. So I definitely get your struggles!

Donโt worry about it! Iโm super behind myself too haha ๐
I have no idea, I think they were already out by the time I joined the book blogging community, and before that I didnโt know much about new releases, which books were popular etc. but they were both very hyped ya fantasy books so the similar titles really didnโt help haha

Super!

โค
