I didn’t think I was ever going to post one of these but here we are. The start of the month was so bad with book buying (well I mean I have done worse) that I agreed with my husband that it was about time to actually enforce a book buying ban.
Book Buying Ban
It was June 5th when we decided last minute to go away for the day. Husband had a day off and would have to work plenty after that so a day away sounded like a good idea. I gave him the choice between Eindhoven (Van Pierre book store), Breda (Coffee and Literature) and The Hague (The American Book Store). See where I am going with this?
Anyway we went to The Hague, Merijn puked in the car, finally found ABC after 1,5 hours of walking (while apparently we parked not even 5 minutes away from them, story of my life). And then proceeded to reign myself back from grabbing ALL the books. I’ve visited ABC in Amsterdam quite a bit over the years, but The Hague ABC you guys. It isn’t quite as pretty as the one in Amsterdam but holy tbr’s, this store had literally every book I wanted and more. I didn’t even go upstairs to the second hand books because I already had four books.

We also got a slightly marked down Ron Hogwarts train and since we got so much we also got a free very sturdy tote bag. Back to the point though, clearly I have a problem. I am not making a dent in my phsycial tbr. I am not getting to the books that I want. And while I think limiting book buying works better than a ban in the long run I should be able to manage 2 months, right? So I agreed with my husband that this ban would last at least until Deventer Boekenmarkt (which is on August 5th).
Rules
- No book buying between June 6th to August 4th for myself. My husband can’t buy me books either.
- Gifts are okay.
- I can still enter giveaways.
- Pre orders already made can still come.
- Ebooks do not fall in the book buying ban (though I rarely buy any anyway).
- I can request on Netgalley but it has to be those I really want.
When this ban started I had two months. Now I have little over a month left…
I have sinned once. My pre order of A Thousand Perfect Notes by our very own lovely Cait from Paper Fury was cancelled on her release day. I know. My husband decided to relent and ordered the book for me a week later. It were special circumstances. Other than that I have not yet bought any other books.
Don’t mind some of these pictures. Mika, our cat, had to be in some of them. She apparently needed attention.
★ Shadowshaper (Shadowshaper 1) by Daniel Jose Older
I found this in a nearby book store on June 2nd. I had never seen it in a book store here in the Netherlands so I was very pleasantly surprised to see it. It has been on my tbr for a long time.
★ The Diviners (The Diviners 1) by Libba Bray
I found this in ABC for 7 Euro and I could not pass this up as I have had my eye on this for so long.
★ The Ninth Rain (The Winnowing Flame 1) by Jen Williams
I got the ebook as a freebie but as I can only read it through the kindle app on my phone that was not going to work that well. And I have been hearing such good things about that one that I have been itching to read it really.
★ The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang
I did it. I caved. I still think this book might be too triggering for me right now but maybe in the future, and Aentee from Reads at Midnight has a summary of the most triggering chapter for some of us which is super helpful. ❤ The link to her review with the link to that summary you can find here.
★ The Shadow of What Was Lost (Licanius 1) by James Islington
This is a more recent addition to my want tbr but one that has rising so very quickly. I hear only good things about it and there is something about these covers and titles that draw my interest.
★ The Amulet of Samarkand (Bartimaeus 1) by Jonathan Stroud +
OHMYGOSH. La La in the Library found this for me and shipped it my way. I’ve not been able to find the hardcovers in ever. ❤ I only got lucky last year and found The Golem’s Eye one signed. Thank you so much again La La for sending this to me. ❤ ❤ ❤
★ A Finding of Kin (The Keepers of Verdoso 1) by L.A. Millett
The author was very kind to send a physical copy my way to review. ❤
★ A Thousand Perfect Notes by C.G. Drews
Hello beauty. ❤ Also this is the copy that has the cover/spine misprinted. ._.
★ Papa and Me by Party Paws
Merijn only hauled one book this month and that was this book I got for him and his dad for Father’s Day. It is cute.
★ Storm of the Gods (Areios Brothers 1) by Amy Braun
The brother element appealed to me. I also haven’t heard about this one so I decided to request from Netgalley.
★ Bright Ruin (Dark Gifts 3) by Vic James
Oh my god. I thought this wasn’t coming out until October but that is the us edition and the Uk one is coming out end of July. So pleased I saw this on Netgalley. Last year I totally got declined for Tarnished City so very pleased with myself now.
★ The Demon Race by Alexandria Warwick
Another review copy that I got straight from the author. It sounds super interesting and with Demons you cannot go wrong.
★ Schimmenlied (De Schimmenwereld serie 1) by Lynn Robin
This was a freebie on the publisher’s website for a week and since it is on the short side I thought this would be a nice inbetween read at some point. Also to give more chance to Dutch authors.
★ Lady Mechanika volume 4: Clockwork Assasin by Joe Benitez
I have been wanting to read this graphic novel for a while and finally reserved the volumes that were available at the library. Then I saw this on NG and decided to go for it.
The ABC is my place.. I live 20 minutes away, by bike so it’s basically home to me haha. If me snd my boyfriend can be found anywhere, it’s in the ABC

Oh that is so cool. I would not survive living that close haha. My house would be filled with books and books would be our source food XD

I would actually be afraid to enter that store, I think 😀 I love your bag! Good luck on the rests of your ban 🙂 and I’ve heard really good things about Shadowshaper.

Wow that store sounds amazing!
I’m sort of always on a bit of a book buying ban, because I am broke, and literally cannot afford books. I treat myself now and then (I did with A Thousand Perfect Notes too. And I’m hopefully going to buy a couple books soon, because I *should* have some money coming in.), but not much.
And oh my gosh, I am cringing so much at that copy of ATPN! It’s such a good book, it doesn’t deserve weird misprinting. 😩

ABC is my favourite bookstore ❤️ I’ve never been to the one in Den Haag though, so I’m curious about that one now 🙂 Sometimes a book buying ban is necessary haha. You did get amazing books on your haul though!

It is certainly not as pretty as Amsterdam but this one is just a bit cozier, you know? And I could actually reach everything. Also very important for this midget haha.

I think Mika was a fab addition to the photos. 😻
The Licanius book cover reminds me of Halloween. 🎃 The Shadow Shaper cover is wonderful, too!
You are welcome for the book. 💟 I was relieved it wasn’t an unidentified library book like most of mine were. I am going to be doing another search and destroy on Better World Books in August, so I’ll look for the third one. I’m on a book buying ban for July, also, because our microwave broke and I have to buy a new one. 😞 I didn’t realize how much I used it until it was dead, ha ha. ⚡
Primo photos. 🙌🙌🙌

She always is haha. 😉
Right? I love the colors I think. We don’t get those too often. 😀
Oh no. Stupid microwave. It is just one of those things you use without thinking.

OMG, I see a James Islington book! I’m about halfway through that one but had to put it down earlier this year due to a BAAAAD fantasy slump. I’m hoping to pick it back up and actually restart it later this month. My fiance has the audiobook that I can listen to, which is what I was doing last time, and it was gorgeous and had an amazing narrator, but unfortunately I really struggle with audiobooks for high fantasy worlds because I have a hard time processing names unless I have seen them written before. (Does that make any sense? I don’t know how else to say it really.) So, every time there was a name I had never read before, my brain would just… kind of not be willing to hold on to it until I grabbed the physical copy and found it and saw how it was spelled. So, long story short, I think I’m going to just read it physically and sadly say goodbye to the amazing audio narrator lol.

I completely get what you mean. It is one of the smaller reasons I avoid audiobooks since I read so much fantasy. I need to read the name too. When I hear it I just keep wondering: Did I hear it right? What was it again? How is it spelled? I hope the physical copy will work better in the long run for you!

Oh my gosh, your comment made me feel so much better lol! I’m so glad it isn’t just me! It’s such a weird feeling and it can be so frustrating because it’s like no matter how hard I try, I can’t quite work my way past the obstacle. It makes me feel better to know I’m not alone. ♥ And thank you!
