Undress Me! Surprises On Naked Hardcovers in My Collection

Over on bookstagram last year, Liesbet from Zwartraafje and I talked briefly about naked hardcovers. While the dustjackets can sometimes be very pleasing to our eyes, beneath it we can sometimes find some treasure on the naked hardcover itself. We were marveling about that and realized that it would be great to do a blog post about it. Who doesn’t want to drool over pretty naked hardcovers?

So today I am sharing with you some of those hardcovers in my own collection. While I own quite a few hardcovers by now, these surprises are often not found a lot of them. Which does make it extra special when you do find one.

On the Edge of Gone by Corinne Duyvis – Read

Perhaps not too exciting to have the title pressed in the hardcover but I think it gives the hardcover a nice fancy look.

Iron Cast by Destiny Soria – TBR

I was so surprised to see this on the naked hardcover of Iron Cast. It is so pretty and it matches so well with the dust jacket!

Image Pressed In

Possessed by Kate Cann – TBR

I found this one fairly cheap and I’ll be honest and say that the naked hardcover was a deciding factor in getting it. Obviously I am interested in reading it as well though.

Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them: Screenplay by J.K. Rowling – Read

This is probably not the first time you have seen this. When the screenplay was released I saw so many show of this gorgeous naked hardcover. It is a niffler. So stinkin’ cute.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber – Read

Another well known naked hardcover. Before Caraval was released it was announced that there would be 4 different images on the hardcovers and it would be a surprise which one you would get. I think there was also a fifth one that was exclusive to a store in the USA. While this wasn’t really the one I had hoped for it is still pretty.

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman – TBR

I had no idea this was under this one either. I have to say that Neil Gaiman often gets the prettiest hardcovers, seriously.

This Monstrous Thing by Mackenzi Lee – TBR

While pink isn’t something I usually like I quite like it on this image. It really stands out.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman – Read

I already had the paperback but the prettiness of this naked hardcover is the reason I bought a hardcover as well #noshame

Whole Naked Hardcover

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – Read

The whole of Illuminae is quite original, from the format to the seethrough dust jacket with the whole text on the white (!) naked hardcover.

First & Then by Emma Mills – TBR

This one is also so gorgeous! I love that the raindrops form a heart. The back is completely coverd in the rain drops.

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff – TBR

Hard to get on the photo well but I love how this images goes from the front into the back.

Snow White by The Brothers Grimm and illustrated by Camille ROse Garcia – Read

Okay this whole edition is gorgeous. If you love the fairy tales this is such a need to have. The illustrations inside are gorgeous and look at that naked hardcover!

Heartless by Marissa Meyer – Read

The checkers really fits well with the retelling aspect.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness – Read

This one is so striking to peel from under the dustjacket. The blue with the black branches.

The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli

The Dutch publisher put the image of the dust jacket on the naked hardcover as well. So nice!

  1. I love this idea for a post because I would never have known about any of these if you hadn’t shared the photos! Even just text pressed in is a nice surprise, but wow, the ones in that last section are just GORGEOUS! And I had never seen the Fantastic Beasts one, but I love it!

I only have two pretty hardcovers myself. My favorite is Carry On, which has a little outline silhouette of the two guys’ profiles (I haven’t read it yet though). I also have one that has the cover image on the hardcover itself.

    1. I love it when they do this with hardcovers because it really makes it so worth it to get them!
And yes sometimes we need to show our hardcovers undressed a bit more. 😉

  2. I looooove when naked hardbacks are unique and pretty. ❤ It's such a selling point for me, especially because I post a lot of naked hardbacks on my bookstagram! I just ordered the UK hardback of Godsgrave and have a friend looking for a copy of the UK hardback of Nevernight for me.

    1. Same (except I need to post more naked hardcovers). If I am hesitating on a hc or a pb I certainly make sure to know if there is something nice underneath the dustjacket or not, haha.
I actually haven’t seen the naked hardcover of Godsgrave. I’m going to have to search for that.

      1. The US one is basic, but the UK hardcover has (I think) an embossed wolf on it? I hope that’s all of the UK hardcovers and not just the special edition, because it was really lovely when I saw it!

  4. I LOVE this post!! I love looking under dust jackets in general- I go to the bookstore every so often and just look under all the jackets to find the surprises. Is that weird? I kind of want to share some of mine, too! Some are such amazing finds! I LOVE Iron Cast, that is one of my favorite quotes, and I think it is just so perfect for the book! Of course the Illuminae series is epic. The Ocean at the End of the Lane is beautiful too. Thanks so much for sharing your lovely pictures! !

    1. No not at all. I take a peak every now and then too. (But lot less hardcovers with dustjackets here). And yes you totally should share yours. I’d love to see!

  5. Ah, I love this post! I own quite a few hardbacks, but only a small number of them have pretty things underneath. But than again, I don’t always check! For instance, I’ve had This Monstrous Thing for years and only found out now that it has a picture underneath! So thank you for that, haha 😀

I think my favourite of all of these would have to be the Snow White one. There is something super gorgeous about the naked hardcover of that one!

Now I feel like going through the hardcovers that I have never looked at underneath the dust jacket to see if there are any surprises!

    Lovely post ^.^

    1. Haha you are welcome. 😉
Right? I was so surprised to see it under that already pretty dustjacket. I really love the style of the illustrations and I should try and get the other few this artist published with some fairytales.

      Were there any? 😀

  6. I had not seen the Fantastic Beasts cover! I love the Possessed cover! PURPLE! 😍 I read the duology, but the ending of the second book was like there was going to be a third one, it felt unfinished to me. I keep forgetting to check and see if she had gotten around to a third book. Elizabeth sent me a hardcover of the Anansi (spelling?) Boys and I just checked the cover and it has a foil spider on it! The Heartless checkerd book is primo, too! I know what I will be doing tomorrow. Heh heh. 📚

Did I ever tell you that before we moved here all the books on the shelves in my living room were sans dustcovers? Thats why I love books like the Gollancz books because I don’t have to decide! 😛

    Beautiful photos as always. 💜

    1. It is why I bought the screenplay haha.
Sad that Possessed doesn’t seem to have gotten the ending it needed. That really sucks.
Yes the checkers was such a surprise when I got that book.

Haha. I did that with my hp ones when I was a teen. And true, true. Will you do without dustcovers again?
